Maine Road Construction on I-295

For those heading south on I-295 toward Freeport between June 16 and August 31, you will encounter the complete closure of the southbound lanes of I-295.

According to the Maine Department of Transportation, the southbound lanes of I-295 will be completely closed from Gardiner Exit 49 to Topsham (just north of Freeport) Exit 31 from June 16 to August 31.

There are a couple of alternative routes for southbound travelers. The first is to take Southbound US-201 (this is where the signs will send you), from I-295, and follow it to Topsham, where you will be able to rejoin I-295, about 5 minutes from Freeport, then take Exit 22 (Mallett Drive, Routes 136 & 125) to get here. This route is represented by the light purple line on the map below.

Another option is to stay on I-95 from Augusta (don't take the I-295 exit), then proceed to the Auburn/Lewiston exit, looking for Route 136, which will bring you across to Freeport on Mallett Drive. This route is represented by the green line on the map below.
