Independence Day 2008 in Freeport, Maine
This week marks the first big holiday of the summer season (OK, I know that in many parts of the USA Memorial Day holds that honor, but the busy summer season in Maine doesn't really get started until after July 4, so that pretty much leaves Memorial Day out of the "summer" plans).
One of the inspirational things that will be a part of the festivities in Freeport will be the Freeport Flag Ladies. These ladies proudly display their patriotism at all major holidays, parades and events, as well as every Tuesday throughout the year, in honor of the 9-11 tragedy and to honor our troops. That is something to be proud of!
The day begins (for some visitors, anyway) with a pancake breakfast at St. Jude's Catholic Church, from 7-10 a.m. (those staying in one of our B&B's will no doubt be eating in). At 7:30 a.m. there is L.L. Bean's 10k race and 1 mile fun run at 9:15 a.m. to work off those breakfasts!
The annual parade will begin at Kendall Lane, at 10:00 a.m., and proceed down Main Street (US-1), past the Brewster House B&B to Holbrook Street (near the City Hall). Our guests love to take benches and lawn chairs to sit on the front lawn and watch the parade go right past the house.
In the evening there will be another of L.L. Bean's free summer concerts in Discovery Park. Toby Lightman will be performing. Then on Saturday night the concert will headline Daryl Hall. The concert series continues each Saturday until Labor Day weekend. Concert dates and artists, and many of the other events in the Freeport area, can be found on our events page.
See you soon!
