One
of the ideas behind our recent trip (more on that below) to England,
Wales and Scotland (besides sightseeing, enjoying the countryside
and history, of course) was to stay in some B&B's in the UK, to see
if the innkeepers there did things differently than we do here, and to
see if there were ideas we could use to enhance the experience for
visitors to Brewster House. We stayed in some lovely B&B's in all
three countries, had wonderful visits with the innkeepers, and traded
experiences. While we found that some things seem to be the same the
world over, there are definitely some important differences, too.
One
lovely B&B was Bramley House (right), in
Chipping Campden, in England's Cotswolds. Another was Ardconnel House (left)
in Inverness, Scotland. Others were Bodalwyn Guest House in
Aberystwyth, Wales, Dunsford
Guest House in Keswick, in England's Lake District, Glenalmond House
in Edinburgh, Scotland, and The Apothecary's House in
Askrigg, Yorkshire Dales, England.
Each B&B was unique and reflected the tastes and personalities of
the innkeepers. Still, there were many similarities between them, and
between the UK bed and breakfasts and Brewster House.
We think you'll be pleased to find some small, but important, additions
the next time you visit. From hospitality trays in the guest rooms to
improving our coffee service, we hope to provide a higher level of
hospitality, and a more enjoyable Bed and Breakfast experience for our
guests.
You may have noticed our
Specials page on the Brewster House web site. Apparently you're not
alone! We've had notices from Kiplinger and Marketwatch (to name just two)
that they were including reference to our Fuel
Saver special in the online editions of their publications.
In addition to the "Fuel
Saver" special (a $25 gas gift card with a
two night stay, $50 with a three night or longer stay) through July, we
have several other current specials you may want to consider for your
upcoming travel plans.
Through May 11 we continue our Show
Your Card and Save special for AAA members.
We have two packages
with schooner sails through Portland Schooner Co. Sail
Into the Sunset is an all-inclusive experience of a lifetime, with
a sunset sail, two nights lodging, an L.L. Bean shopping spree and an a
$50 restaurant card, and more! Schooners
and Lighthouses adds a two hour schooner trip to your room, and
also provides a driving tour of area lighthouses.
Brewster House is
pleased to partner once again this year with Fox Ridge Golf Course to
offer greens fees packages on New England's premier championship
course. Our Free
Golf special provides one greens fee with shared cart with a two
night stay at Brewster House, valid Sun-Thursday nights (both nights
must be Sun-Thurs). The Stay
'n Play special includes a night's lodging and one greens fee with
shared cart. Extra greens fees with cart can be added at a very good
rate!
We are
also delighted to offer you a very special opportunity to see the
outstanding spring flowers, rhododendrons and other beautiful plants at
the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. Our arrangement with the Botanical
Gardens allows us to provide our guests with admission tickets at a
discount.
As we noted last time, hat's a question we are often asked. The answer,
in this case, is that
we pick a very slow time and put out the "No Vacancy" sign.
That's exactly what we
did in March and early April of this year. As noted above, we stayed in
B&B's in England, Scotland and Wales and had an absolutely
