About the Brewster House
Jarvis Adelbert Brewster built
the house in 1888. He was born
October 30, 1861 in Lincolnville
(just north of Camden), Maine.
He moved to Freeport in
approximately 1887, following his
marriage to Fannie Adams, the
daughter of Captain Israel
Adams, of Lincolnville. Brewster
was a local businessman and the
owner of J. A. Brewster, General
Merchandise, and a "Dealer in Hardware, Stoves, Crockery, Groceries, Lime, Cement, Paints, Oils, etc." (as his store invoices of the 1890's recite). His store was located on the block where L. L. Bean stands today.
Brewster's brother, James H. Brewster, assisted him in the store for a time, before moving to Lisbon Falls, Maine, where he worked as a bookkeeper before buying his own successful hardware business.
So far as we know, Jarvis and Fannie had only one child, Mabel, who died at the age of seven years, in 1896.
Great care was taken during the year-long renovation process to retain and restore its antique features while creating spacious guest rooms and adding large new bathrooms and a sprinkler system. Brewster House Bed and Breakfast opened its doors to guests on July 2, 1994.
Our thousands of guests have complimented us most often on our beautiful decor, wonderful breakfast selections and impeccable cleanliness. Our Maine State Board of Health score has been a perfect 100% since our opening.
We are most appreciative of the assistance of Mr. James Brewster (descendant of Jarvis' brother, James ) of Falmouth, Massachusetts, for providing some of the historical information for this page.
